The Biology Laboratory is a biocontainment Level 2 lab with Cell Culture, Molecular Biology and general Biochemistry capabilities. The lab is equipped with two Microzone Class II Type A Biological Safety Cabinets, two waterjacket CO2 incubators with the ability to be connected to two CO2 tanks each (to prevent accidental depletion of gas), inverted and upright light microscopes, liquid nitrogen Dewar flasks, a Coulter Particle Counter, microtitre plate washers, waterbaths, refrigerators and -20°C freezers for cell culture applications. We also have an Olympus IX-81 motorized inverted research microscope able to detect five fluorescent dyes.
For molecular biology purposes the laboratory contains DNA and SDS-PAGE electrophoresis apparatus, Western Blotting equipment, an Eppendorf Mastercycle Gradient thermocycler, and a UV transilluminator gel documentation system. As our focus is on nanotechnology, we also possess a µTK Microfluidic tool kit system by Micralyne.
The laboratory is also equipped for general biochemistry purposes including:
